What does my ex mean by this?

So I still like my ex boyfriend A LOT. And my friend (who is also friends with him) asked him if he liked me. He said not right now but he doesn't know what might happen in the future. What does he mean by in the future? I'm not trying to overthink it I'm just trying to figure him out
