What did Guinea pigs eat in the wild?

My mum asked me can guinea pigs eat cabbage and i said no because of gas thing then she said 'gosh, The Guinea pigs can't eat nutting! wat did they eat in the wild? I know the eat plenty of EXPENSIVE fruit and veg but what did they originally eat?
